1. RailsGirls Kyiv - Winter Fairy-Tale

    RailsGirls Kyiv - Winter Fairy-Tale

    by Julia, aka Юлия Токарева

It has been a great start for Ukraine during this year. Three times RailsGirls were held in our country, firstly in Kharkiv then Dnipropetrovsk and finally - Kyiv.

Well, it was a high time to organize RailsGirls in Kyiv before the Doomsday comes :)
Taking into account that the Organizers’ Team was not from Kyiv but from Dnipropetrovsk we had to do our preparations well in advance.
Our call for coaches was rapidly taken up by local Ruby developers and since that we built a perfect Team!
Gathered cool people altogether and 60 enthusiastic girls we were absolutely ready to make the workshop happen. 10 coaches, 60 participants & 8 teams!

So, Friday started off with the traditional welcome introduction from the organizers RubyGarage and installation fest!
As the work space was “dressed” with funny posters and purple balloons that made the atmosphere more than informal and hands-on.

With the help of our awesome coaches girls easily did the Rails installation without any troubles, but nobody went home so fast cause we couldn’t miss our FRIDAY HUG :) All in all Girls were satisfied with the Friday’s achievements because they made 1st successful step to the RubyWorld.
After perfect timing coaches and organizers had an evening dinner where they discussed all details for the next day :)

The Saturday started off with the cup of coffee!
Despite of the freezing weather the atmosphere inside was getting warmer and warmer, new faces, tasty cookies and morning greetings that  made the Saturday morning.
Following the tradition, after “happy meal” there was a moment to thank all our wonderful sponsors who helped us out to carry the workshop and produce girls with cool give-away presents.

After warm words there was a high time for lightning talks with the incredible presentations flavored with some Bentobox exercises to help girls to figure out how things like HTML, MySQL, and Rails could  fit into building web applications.

The “happy coding part” started at 12 30!
During the workshop all the girls-groups were fully involved in the process of creation their first web application - “gifts for friends”. The chosen topic was up-to-date because of the upcoming Christmas and New Year.
It’s an application for making wish list – you can invite your friends to register in there, thus they would specify some things they want to be gifted. Therefore, no more inconvenience and your nearest and dearest would get what they want :)
Ladies were so excited about doing their first app that we could hardly interrupt them to have a lunch :)

After having a small break everybody were back to creation all in all girls did their best from the very beginning to uploading their apps to Heroku.

That great day ended up with champagne, happy smiles, tasty desserts, new friends and further desire to learn more about programming on Ruby.

We want to thank our fantastic coaches and organizers team RubyGarage for having done a really great job. Huge thanx goes to our hosting patrner Cogniance for providing us with cozy and comfortable space and to our cool sponsors and partners for thier support: Infopulse Ukraine , Railsware , Svitla Systems , Github , JetBraines , Heroku , QA Club Kiev , Codeschool  and Dou.

Everything was awesome and we hope to see more curious ladies dealing with coding :)
